In principio fu Grexit, la bruttissima fusione di Greece (o Greek) ed exit coniata per esprimere la possibilità della fuoriuscita (volontaria o forzata) della Grecia dall’UE in conseguenza della crisi finanziaria. Poi arrivò Brexit, per descrivere lo stesso scenario in versione britannica. Oggi che la campagna referendaria è in pieno svolgimento – i cittadini britannici saranno chiamati alle urne il 23 giugno per decidere se restare o no nell’Unione Europea – ecco comparire il termine Brexiter. Eh già, qualcuno si è sentito in dovere di inventare un termine così sgradevole per riferirsi ai fautori dell’uscita del Regno Unito dall’UE…
Origini del termine
Grexit comparve nel 2012, seguito a ruota da Brexit (e altre combinazioni simili). Dopo l’annuncio ufficiale della data del referendum, lo scorso febbraio, il termine Brexiter è assurto rapidamente agli onori delle cronache, sorpassando Outer come appellativo per descrivere i sostenitori del Vote Leave. Il termine è formato semplicemente aggiungendo il suffisso –er alla parola Brexit.

First came Grexit, the ugly blend of Greece (or Greek) and exit coined to express the possibility that Greece might be forced to leave the EU as a result of the financial crisis. Then came Brexit, used to describe the possibility that the UK might do the same. Now, with the campaign well underway for the June referendum which will decide whether Britain stays in the EU or leaves, we have the even more unappealing term Brexiter, which someone has seen fit to invent in order to refer to those who believe that the UK would be better off outside the Union.
Origin
Grexit appeared in 2012, soon followed by Brexit (and various other similar combinations). And there it stayed until the EU referendum was announced in February, at which point Brexiter seems to have sprung into existence in the media, rapidly overtaking Outer as the term of choice for describing those who are urging people to Vote Leave. It is formed by the simple expedient of adding the suffix –er to the word Brexit.
