One of the best tools in the parenting toolbox for toddlers is “Use your words!”

The language of modern technology is full of words that refer to the physical world repurposed for the electronic or virtual one: just think of window, file, interface, back and front end, not to mention Facebook (originally a directory with pictures of people in it), Twitter (what small birds do), chat and so on.

Two such terms are toolkit and toolbox. Until the dawn of the computer age a tool kit was a set of physical tools, especially one kept for a particular purpose, while a tool box was a container for keeping tools in. Both terms were adopted very early on by computer people to refer to a set of software tools that can be used to build more advanced tools or programs.

Toolkit in particular has been extended further, to refer to a set of skills or resources that can be used in a specific area, as in the last three examples above.

Origin

Toolkit and toolbox are generally used interchangeably, although some people distinguish between them, using one as a subset of the other. Toolbox was first used in a computing context back in the 1960s, while toolkit started to be used in a similar way a couple of decades later.
