freegan

freegan – sostantivo

freeganism – sostantivo non numerabile

If you’re interested in freeganism because you hate waste, you can volunteer collecting food or cooking.

In New York City, freegans promote food justice and combat food waste by eating trash.

Perhaps the most notorious freegan strategy is what is commonly called “urban foraging” or “dumpster diving”.

Freeganism is a philosophy and associated lifestyle that rejects consumerism and seeks to reduce consumption by a variety of means, including recycling and foraging for usable goods – including food – that have been discarded. A freegan is someone who advocates and follows this lifestyle. Freegans pursue this goal in a number of ways, but the one that has received most publicity is dumpster diving (or skip diving), which will be the topic of a future post.

Origins

Freegan and freeganism are blends of the adjective free and the nouns vegan and veganism. Although not all freegans are vegans or even vegetarians, the movement is very much in tune with the side of veganism that is concerned with conservation of the Earth’s finite resources. The term originated in a 1999 pamphlet called Why Freegan? (subtitled an attack on consumption – in defense of donuts) by drummer and restaurateur Warren Oakes, although the ideas it espouses are of course much older.
