Generation Z, Gen Z – sostantivo

Generation K – sostantivo

Generation Z are — to their cynical Gen X parents — almost nauseatingly worthy, keen to volunteer and aware that an education is to be treasured.

Generation K is more sober: teenagers drink less alcohol and take fewer drugs than their recent predecessors.

If you can’t imagine never having Internet again and the thought of losing your phone terrifies you, you definitely fit the Generation K profile.

The defining feature so far of Generation Z, those born after the mid 1990s, is that they have grown up with the internet and, more recently, social media. There are some indications that they are more socially aware and engaged than their immediate predecessors in Generation Y, but this could just be the optimism and idealism of youth.

A subset of Generation Z are what British author and academic Noreena Hertz has dubbed Generation K, girls and young women aged between around 13 and 21. According to Hertz, who has spent considerable time studying and speaking to this group and published a report on them earlier this year, their lives have been shaped by technology, economic uncertainty and terrorism. However, while they show understandably high levels of anxiety they are also generous, open-minded and creative.

Origins

While Generation Z follows in the sequence of Generations X and Y, Hertz named Generation K after Katniss Everdeen, heroine of the wildly popular Hunger Games series and an idol for many of her young admirers.
