hot take

hot take – sostantivo

Rios took aim at the hot take brand of journalism that has, he says, infested the sports media landscape.

Salon’s Simon Maloy said, “a hot take is a piece of deliberately provocative commentary that is based almost entirely on shallow moralizing”.

hot take – noun

We’ll be back in a few days with more of our staff’s hot takes.

Rios took aim at the hot take brand of journalism that has, he says, infested the sports media landscape.

Salon’s Simon Maloy said, “a hot take is a piece of deliberately provocative commentary that is based almost entirely on shallow moralizing”.

Do you ever get tired of being expected to have an opinion on everything? Pity the poor journalist in the age of social media who is expected to produce a commentary on the latest hot topic within a few hours, if not sooner, in order to feed the monster that is the 24-hour rolling news cycle. With no opportunity to do proper research or reach a considered judgement, they frequently churn out ill-informed and ill-considered reaction pieces, otherwise known as hot takes.

The hot take comes to us from the excitable world of sports commentary, where offering instant opinions is regarded as an essential part of the job. The fact that complex political and social issues are less suited to such instant reactions has done nothing to impede the rise of the hot take in the world outside the sports studio.

Origins

Hot take combines the noun take, meaning someone’s opinion about something, (as in What’s your take on the outcome of the referendum?) and the adjective hot. While take is neutral and hot generally has positive connotations, the resulting compound noun is almost invariably used in a disparaging way. The term started in sports journalism and spread to more general use in the past few years.
