Allyship is a process, and everyone has more to learn.
In the past the noun and verb ally have mostly been associated with military and diplomatic contexts, although an ally can simply be someone who helps and supports you, especially when you are having problems. Recently the noun in particular has taken on an additional meaning. An ally of a marginalised or disadvantaged community or group is someone who not only is not prejudiced against people from that community or group but tries and works to actively support them. The term gained prominence in the LGBT+ context but is applicable to many other situations as well. In the last few weeks the context that has come to the fore is that of the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on people of colour and the protests over the killings of George Floyd and others by police officers.
Origin
While the word ally has been around for many centuries, the meaning discussed above is very recent, and is only just starting to be covered in dictionaries. The related noun allyship dates from the 19th century but has only recently started to be used in the context of human and civil rights. Again, you won’t yet find it in most dictionaries.
