The use of they as an indeterminate singular pronoun is widely accepted now, and is neat and useful when you don’t know or don’t want to specify the gender of the person you are talking about. A more recent use of they and its related forms them, their, themself and themselves is as the pronoun of choice by people who identify as non-binary: neither exclusively male nor exclusively female. It is a sign of the pace of change in the language we use to talk about gender that non-binary they has obtained broad (though not universal) acceptance and use in such a short space of time. Merriam-Webster added non-binary they to its dictionary last year and has also chosen the term as its word of the year, noting that searches for they on its website increased by over 300% during 2019.

While non-binary they has been in use for some time, it gained wider attention in the course of 2019, with several well-known figures stating publicly that they are non-binary and wish to be referred to with the pronouns they and them.
