Con heteronormative, eteronormativo, ci si riferisce a un modello culturale in cui l’eterosessualità è percepita come normale, attesa e scontata, a svantaggio di altri orientamenti sessuali ritenuti anomali e quindi da scoraggiare. L’ eteronormatività, heteronormativity, è l’imposizione di tale modello.

Heteronormative proviene dal campo degli studi di genere e della teoria queer degli anni 1990 ed è formato dal prefisso hetero- più l’aggettivo normative; heteronormativity è il sostantivo derivato dall’aggettivo.

Heteronormativity is the view of the world that regards heterosexuality as the norm and privileges it above other sexual orientations and gender identities. Heteronormative attitudes and people demonstrate this world view, either consciously or unconsciously.
It is 50 years since homosexual acts between consenting males over 21 years of age were decriminalised in the UK. The event is being widely celebrated and recorded in programmes and articles across the media, but in truth the 1967 Act marked not a sea change but the start of a long, slow and halting progress towards societal acceptance of different sexualities and full human rights for non-binary, non-heterosexual people. Terms and concepts such as heteronormative and heteronormativity, along with many others, have come into being as part of this process.
Origin
The terms heteronormative and heteronormativity come from the academic fields of gender studies and queer theory and started to be widely used in the early 1990s. They are formed by adding the prefix hetero- to the adjective normative, meaning ‘relating to rules or forcing people to obey them’, and the related noun.
