challenger bank
challenger bank – sostantivo
A vibrant group of banking businesses is emerging in the UK, often described as challenger banks.
Britain’s array of challenger banks are doing a decent job of offering something new to customers – but can they possibly topple the big four?
If a challenger bank does not have to have a banking license, what makes a business a challenger bank?

challenger bank – noun

If a challenger bank does not have to have a banking license, what makes a business a challenger bank?
The financial crisis of 2008-2010 may seem a long time ago, but its repercussions are still being felt. It was widely suggested at the time and subsequently that the big banks had lost sight of their responsibilities to their customers in pursuit of profits for themselves. As a result, it was decided to encourage the establishment in the UK of small retail banks that could compete for business with the handful of national (and international) behemoths and so encourage competition and fairness towards customers.
Dozens of challenger banks have been set up as a result, a few as offshoots of the big four banks themselves. Most operate exclusively via smartphone app or online, and offer excellent customer service as well as innovative services such as real-time payment notifications and instant payments to other account holders. The most successful have many hundreds of thousands of customers, and as you might expect are especially popular with younger people who are comfortable with managing all aspects of their lives digitally.
Origin
Challenger bank is a compound of the nouns challenger, meaning someone or something that challenges others, and bank.
