Il termine sidebar è stato protagonista di cambiamenti semantici molto interessanti. Usato in origine per designare la zona dell’aula di giustizia antistante alla cattedra, dove gli avvocati possono confabulare col giudice, assunse più tardi il significato, negli USA, di ‘riunione confidenziale tra giudice e avvocati su questioni procedurali’. Sempre negli USA, il termine è poi passato a indicare una colonna affiancata all’articolo principale su un quotidiano e in seguito è diventato il nome del pannello laterale sullo schermo del computer o su una finestra di un programma, la barra laterale, appunto.
In tempi recenti sidebar ha assunto anche funzione di verbo con un significato prossimo a quello in campo legale, ovvero ‘conversare segretamente con altri partecipanti a riunioni, cene, funzioni pubbliche ecc. escludendo il resto dei presenti’. Oggi, con un’ulteriore estensione di significato, il sostantivo sidebarring si riferisce a tale pratica svolta sul telefonino, specialmente quando l’oggetto della conversazione segreta è fisicamente presente.

The word sidebar has gone through some interesting changes of meaning. Originally used to refer to an area of a courtroom close to the judge’s bench where lawyers can speak privately to the judge, the term much later started to be used in the US to refer to a confidential meeting between a judge and lawyers on procedural matters. Also in the US the term started to be used to refer to a narrow column alongside a main article in a newspaper, subsequently becoming the name of the panel located beside the main display area of a computer screen or window. Sidebar has recently morphed into a verb that is related to the legal meaning. Sidebarring is the practice of carrying on a secret conversation while supposedly involved in a general discussion. This meaning has now been extended to refer to the practice of doing so on your phone while at a meeting or social event, especially when this secret conversation refers to people who are actually in the room with you.
Origin
The noun sidebar dates back to the 17th century. The verb and uncountable noun are so recent they are not yet found in most dictionaries.
