Being independent, self confident and autonomous are also some of the key characteristics of Generation Z.

On average, Gen Zers use their smartphones 15.4 hours per week—more than any other type of device.

The term Generation Z was coined around the year 2000 to refer to those born since the mid 1990s. Gen Z, like Gen X and Gen Y, is a handy short form, while a Gen Zer is someone who belongs to Generation Z. Generation Z was preceded by Generation Y, as you might expect, and took its name from this, being the next letter in the alphabet. People from Generation Y are often referred to as Millennials, because they came of age around the turn of the millennium. Before them came Generation X which succeeded the baby boom generation, born in the years of population growth that followed World War 2. This generation, often referred to informally as boomers, have come in for quite a lot of criticism recently from less fortunate generations that followed. Boomers are criticized not so much for having benefited from generous welfare, free education, affordable housing and full employment, as for having failed to pass these advantages on to their children and grandchildren who are experiencing conditions of insecure employment and unaffordable housing, with little prospect of improvement any time soon.
